People who live in areas where the soil has low iodide content (such as the Great Plains) normally consume more iodine from foods. The amount of iodide in your body depends on the amount of iodine you consume and the amount of thyroid tissue (which pumps out theiodide). People with normal thyroids can excrete up to 30 per cent of their stored iodide in a single day.
The human body needs a catalyst to make the iodide compound active. This process is called iodination and is catalyzed by the iodide ion (I) iodide is essential for normal thyroid function. Normally, your body stores several hundred millimoles of iodide within normal body tissue; a small portion of this is necessary for daily functions. Properly functioning, the human body can safely store up to five hundred millimoles of iodide. In this situation, an overdose of iodide by itself would be unlikely to cause health problems.
In cases of overdose, stomach and/apoplexy can result. The likelihood of an overdose is increased if the patient is taking other drugs or hormones.
